12 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Uncategorized

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during the planning process. Once the day is over, your photos will be the lasting memories that tell the story of your love, your people, and all the emotion that came with it.

You deserve a photographer who feels like a trusted guide, understands your vision, and captures your day with heart and intention. These twelve questions will help you find the right fit, while giving you peace of mind along the way.

1. What is your photography style?

Make sure their style matches your vision. Do you love candid moments, romantic portraits, or timeless editorial images? The right photographer will bring all of that together in a way that feels effortless and personal to you.

At Kingsley James Studios, I blend documentary storytelling with an artistic, film-inspired style. I focus on capturing polished, natural images that feel as real as the love you share.

2. Can we see full wedding galleries?

Social media shows the highlights, but full galleries reveal the consistency and depth of a photographer’s work. You’ll want to see how they capture the entire day, from getting ready through the reception.

I provide full galleries to every couple who inquires, so you can see exactly what to expect. From emotional moments to fine details, I tell the full story of your day.

3. How do you handle different lighting situations?

Weddings don’t happen in perfect light all day long. Your photographer should be skilled in all lighting conditions, whether it’s a candlelit church, a sunset ceremony, or a dark reception.

Lighting is one of my specialties. Whether I’m working with natural light, flash, or golden hour glow, I create images that are true to color and flattering for every skin tone.

4. What packages do you offer, and what is included?

Ask what is included in the pricing, such as hours of coverage, second shooters, engagement sessions, albums, or digital galleries. Look for clarity and flexibility.

My collections are designed to be seamless and customizable. I walk you through everything during our consultation, so you always know what’s included and what’s possible.

5. Will you be the one photographing our wedding?

This is important to clarify. Some photographers work with associates, and it’s important to know who will actually show up on your wedding day.

I personally photograph every wedding I book. When you hire me, you get me, fully present, fully prepared, and fully committed to your experience.

6. What happens if you can’t make it?

It’s a rare situation, but one you should ask about. A professional should have a solid backup plan and trusted network in place.

I am fully backed by professional liability insurance and a network of highly vetted photographers who share my style and standards. In the rare case of an emergency, you’re never left without coverage.

7. Do you have insurance?

This isn’t just about peace of mind. Many venues require vendors to be insured.

Yes, I carry full liability insurance, which is often required by venues and shows my commitment to professionalism and preparedness.

8. How do you help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera?

Most couples aren’t models. Your photographer should guide you naturally and make the experience feel fun, relaxed, and genuine.

I’m not just here to take pretty pictures, I’m here to bring out your connection. I guide you through prompts and movements that make you look and feel confident, without any stiff posing.

9. Do you help with the wedding day timeline?

Photographers often help shape the flow of the day. A great photographer will know how to build a timeline that creates space for both intentional moments and beautiful light.

Absolutely. I work with you and your planner to create a timeline that feels calm, organized, and photo-friendly. My couples often tell me this was one of the most helpful parts of working with me.

10. How long will it take to receive our images?

Turnaround times vary, but it’s important to know when you can expect sneak peeks and your full gallery.

You’ll receive sneak peeks within the first week and your full gallery within 4 to 6 weeks. Everything is delivered in a private, high-resolution online gallery you can download and share.

11. How are the images edited?

Editing style is just as important as the images themselves. Ask how the photographer edits, and whether they enhance tones, retouch, or keep things natural.

My editing style is clean, timeless, and true to color. I enhance skin tones and preserve the emotion of every moment without over-editing. Your gallery will feel elevated, yet authentic.

12. What makes your experience different?

Beyond technical skills, ask what makes them truly stand out. You’re not just booking a service, you’re inviting someone into one of the most emotional days of your life.

What sets me apart is the experience I create, from our first call to your final gallery. I make sure you feel cared for, seen, and supported throughout the entire process. My job is not just to document your day, but to help you feel present in every part of it.

If you’re looking for a photographer who will capture your love story with artistry, heart, and attention to every detail, I’d love to connect with you.
